In the 1700s  appeared the habit à la française, characterized by a rigid substructure called panier, on which were worn one or more skirts with deep folds at the waist and a tight and open on the front overcoat, so as to show the stomacher and the skirt below. This type of dress is characterized by the use of rich fabrics, complex  stomachers often decorated with bows and sleeves long to the elbow and adorned with cascades of lace.
